March Favorite Things
The prettiest Cherry Blossom Tree
March is not my favorite month. It comes when you are so ready for spring — ready for the early blooms, shedding the layers, sun, and blue skies. Often what you get instead is rain, then rain again, rain with hail, rain with snow, snow, and grey skies.
And then there are days like today — crystal, sparkling blue skies, a cool breeze, and warm sun. The days are getting longer, the blooms are starting to pop out of the ground, and the garden is calling. A reminder that spring is here and will stay.
And that leads me to the first of my favorite things in March:
Gardening in the Evening Sunlight
Beautiful evening gardening
For me, there is nothing better than coming home after a day at the shop, changing into gardening clothes — aka old Levi jeans and a paint-stained sweatshirt — grabbing my Hori Hori, secateurs, and trug, and heading into the garden to start cleaning up the beds, cutting back, dividing, and making room for the new growth that is about to happen.
And on a sunny evening, when the high white clouds are moving through the sky, it is just beautiful. Truly the best.

Free Compost Pile in La Conner
La Conner community compost that is free!
La Conner has a community compost pile. That is huge. I don’t know much about how it all works, but I find it amazing. You do have to fill your trugs yourself, but it’s such a wonderful resource for gardeners — and one of those small-town things that makes living here feel special.
Blooming Magnolia and Cherry Blossom Trees
They are the most beautiful reminder that spring is on its way.
Seed Starts
I’m growing vegetables from seed for the first time. Planting them, watering them, and nurturing them has been so fun, with the best reward being when you see that first bit of green starting to pop out of the soil.
I’m starting small on this journey with only four types of plants — two types of tomatoes (a favorite of mine to grow, though I’ve always started with seedlings before), radishes, and parsley. The starts are still babies, but I’m excited to see how they grow and already want to start more!
These are the things I’m loving this month — in the garden, at home, and in the Skagit Valley. I hope you’re finding a few favorites of your own. Thank you for being part of this little community.
