The Go Outside Restaurant Guide: Mount Vernon
Downtown Mount Vernon, WA along the Skagit River
Mount Vernon has be the toughest restaurant recommendation guide yet. I live in Mount Vernon, I grew up in Mount Vernon, I love Mount Vernon. But for the kind of eateries I love, honestly it’s challenging.
But, if you're wondering where to eat in Mount Vernon, I have go-to favorites. So here we go!
Skagit Valley Larder
This space is a power house. Candace opened “the Larder”, as it is often casually referred to, opened about a year and a half ago along 1st Street in Downtown Mount Vernon. In that time, it has quickly become the kitchen, living room, dining room of Mount Vernon.
They serve amazing baguette tartines and toasties…try the Pastrami Sando, you can thank me later. There are also cheese plates and charcuterie boards, but so much more. They have a cheese case that focuses on small batch domestic cheeses and meats sliced fresh. Then there is a wine shop and they also serve wine by the glass.
They also do events such as cheese making, wine dinners, and wine tasting. The space is cute, warm and welcoming. Often when you pop in as a local, you will run into friends and neighbors. It is not to be missed when you come to Mount Vernon.
Dorothea Coffee
To be honest, I’m not that big of coffee person. I like old fashioned drip brewed dark and strong. But when I go and get coffee, I want good coffee. So for the best coffee in Mount Vernon, it is Dorothea Coffee. Located downtown, along 1st Street, they roast their own beans and pour a mean pour over, but also brew delicious drip coffee from their in-house roasted beans. The space is warm, light, and inviting. Everyone behind the counter is great!
Skagit Valley Co-op
Do I need to say anything? We all know this is the best grocery store in Mount Vernon…maybe Western Washington? …and it has an amazing deli. I shop here …daily?? Sometimes, twice daily?? :-) The Co-op features local produce and organic goods. They stock the produce staples, but also have a fresh selection of what is in seaon. Just shopping the produce section can inspire what to make for dinner. But, if you are just shopping the deli, there many things I love and my favorite, the turkey sandwich. Overall, the Co-op is a Mount Vernon stable and a destination.
Max Dales
This is a Mount Vernon classic. An old school steak house with a slight western feel because all the wood and been. Its dark. The booths are deep. The martini’s are strong. And I love the burger.
Thai House
If you are in downtown Mount Vernon, I love the Thai House. I rarely eat in-house, but order take out for home. Their Thai food is fresh, full of veggies, and just good. The green curry and spicy noodle are my go-to favorites. I oscillate between chicken or tofu. Both are fantastic. There is so much more that is so good on the menu, you really can’t go wrong.
Martini Brunch
If you are looking for breakfast or lunch in Mount Vernon, Martini Brunch is at the top of the list. Funky but so good, playful and know how to play food with the expected breakfast and lunch classics. Order their honeycomb toast for the table, everyone will be happy.
